Welcome back to Dispatch, a personal roundup of videos, records, and anything that I found interesting this month. Think of Dispatch as my monthly mixtape from the internet with no real theme except “this was neat.”
Videos#
- I read Ghost In The Wire by Kevin Mitnick a long long time ago but that is easily the most borrowed book in my "home library " among my techie friends. Kevin is famous for phreaking in the 80s with fern describes him in this video as the kid who hacked America.
- Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has rightfully taken the internet by a storm and this is a great look into how a projectionist handles 70mm film. The process is quite intricate and very analog. Come to think of it, Nolan is singlehandedly ensuring such a profession remains active.
- Speeed has been described a a video version of a men's magazine and it's 100% true. In this video, James Pumphrey breaks down wristwatches: the vocabulary, how they work, the history, what to look out for. The video is quite interesting even for non-beginners.
- Did you know that at some point most countries tried to agree on a road signs standard? If you're like me and aren't aware of that, then this video looks into why the world rejected the UN's road signs and how they came to settle with what is currently in place.
- Many people woefully underestimate how much it takes financially to get into Formula 1. It recently became clear that there is a Kenyan F4 racer seeking support from sponsors but a lot of online users (and friends) simply brushed it off because the kid is from one of the wealthiest families in the country. This video might shed a light for those new to the world of F1.
- I often try to avoid videos that are even slightly political but Max Fisher has a great coverage of the fuel situation owing to the ongoing war in the Middle East. In this video, he shows how China silently saved the world last month staving off the projected fuel crisis.
Films & Shows#
- Dune: Part Two - the holy war begins!!! After procrastinating the last couple of weeks, I finally watched this and enjoyed it very much, even more than the first film. I can't wait for Part Three to come out. It's also quite impressive that the entire trilogy is coming to an end soon considering most recent film franchises and especially shows take an eternity
- The Martian - The Odyssey joins this as yet another movie where Matt Damon tries to get back home.
